Brandon van Kerkwijk wins the WaSOP Main Event (€110,000)
At the end of three days of competition in this Main Event, Brandon van Kerkwijk came out on top after a two-handed deal against Jérôme Sgorrano, one of the Casino de Namur's leading lights for many years.
The Dutch player won on a record field of 1,689 entries, an increase of 70% compared to the 2022 edition, and took home the sum of €110,000, in what is by far his biggest live performance to date. His previous best was a €340 Side Event win in the WPT DeepStack Amsterdam for €19,949.
Brandon van Kerkwijk arrived at the final table with a massive stack of €26 million, compared with €12 million for his closest challenger. He played ultra-solid poker, reserving just one moment of madness when he called a huge bluff against Charly Mouline, finding a way to make the French player fold a huge game with a height of 6.
Heads-up play was one-way against Jérôme Sgorrano. Although the Belgian player got back on track thanks to a flip on the flop when his pair of Kings held up against his opponent's 7-6 of clubs on a T-6-4 flop with two clubs, he suffered greatly against Brandon, who was in total control of his game. Jérôme tried two hero calls which resulted in huge wins for his opponent, who took value when he needed to and avoided losing value when he was behind.
